- Jobs Abroad
Working abroad is not a kind of job (i.e. field/industry), but rather a job location. Job seekers must still offer a skill set to an employer (e.g. marketing skills, technical skills, etc.). Teaching English abroad is often a good option for an American college graduate, since native English speaking skills are in high demand around the world, especially in Eastern Europe and Asia. Working abroad during the year immediately after graduation is also a good option. Work authorization programs allow recent college graduates the freedom to pursue a wide variety of occupations.

The Thomas R. USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program - If you want to work on the front lines of some of the most pressing global challenges of our times — poverty, hunger, injustice, disease, environmental degradation, climate change, conflict and violent extremism – the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development provides an opportunity to advance U.S. foreign policy interests and reflect the American people’s compassion and support of human dignity. The Payne Fellowship provides a unique pathway to the USAID Foreign Service. Fellowship recipients can use the award to attend U.S. graduate programs throughout the country; they will join the USAID Foreign Service upon completion of the program, as long as they successfully complete the Payne Program and USAID entry requirements. The Payne Fellowship encourages the application of members of minority groups who have historically been underrepresented in international development careers and those with financial need.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship - This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
State Department Critical Language Scholarship Program - A program Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers intensive summer language institutes in 13 critical foreign languages. The CLS Program is administered by American Councils and The Ohio State University/Ohio University.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program - Offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research, and/or teach English abroad. In addition, Critical Language Enhancement Awards are available to grantees for study of critical need foreign languages before or during their grant period.
State Magazine - The U.S. Department of State’s monthly magazine is published to facilitate communication between management and employees at home and abroad and to acquaint employees with developments that may affect operations or personnel. The magazine is also available to persons interested in working for the Department of State and to the general public.
Foreign Service Journal - The American Foreign Service Association’s publication covers foreign affairs from an insider’s perspective, providing thoughtful articles on international issues, the practice of diplomacy and the U.S. Foreign Service. Including the AFSA News section, the Journal is published monthly (July-August issues combined).
Foreign Service Blogs - The American Foreign Service Association site has links to dozens of unofficial employee blogs to give you insight into work and life in the U.S. Foreign Service around the world. Students, FS candidates and the general public should find blogs of interest here.
Work Authorization Programs
During the year after graduation, alumni are eligible to obtain work authorization to do any job they can get. These programs provide authorization and helpful relocation and job search resources for a fee. These programs are typically one of the easiest ways for US graduates to get jobs abroad. Positions can range from “casual” (e.g. waiting tables in a pub) to career track. SU graduates have worked in museums, banks, scientific research centers, bookstores, offices, pubs and more.
