Fundraising for Southwestern University’s new multi-purpose sports complex is nearly complete as Trustee Brent Austin has generously pledged a $500,000 challenge match in honor of his wife, Joanne Powers Austin ’74. This powerful gift pushes Southwestern into the final stretch of its fundraising campaign, with $8.5 million now committed for the $9.2 million facility.
“This project is a defining moment for Southwestern,” Austin said. “Joanne’s legacy as a proud alumna and lifelong supporter of this University inspires me every day. I hope this challenge encourages others to join us in creating something truly transformative for generations of students.”
More than infrastructure, the vibrant and inclusive multi-purpose sports complex represents a lasting space for students, alumni, parents, and fans to gather, celebrate, and connect—cementing the role of athletics and school spirit in the Southwestern Experience.
“This challenge match is designed to inspire and double the impact of every new dollar given until we get in the end zone,” Vice President for University Relations Marie Muhvic said. “This isn’t just about building a facility—it’s about building community. The belief in this project has been inspiring, and this challenge match from Mr. Austin underscores just how meaningful this endeavor is to Southwestern alumni, families, and friends.”
Located on the site of the current football practice field east of campus, the new complex will be funded 100% by philanthropy. Design is anticipated to be completed this summer with construction on new guest locker rooms and restrooms scheduled to begin in the fall.
The full scope of the project includes a grandstand, a stadium press box, a synthetic turf playing surface, a locker room, and a concourse area. Construction is expected to continue through the summer of 2026 with home athletic competitions commencing on campus beginning with the fall 2026 semester.
The stadium portion of the new facility will not only bring football back to Southwestern’s campus for the first time since 1950, but will also serve as a central location to build community on campus. The complex will be utilized by other Pirate athletic teams, including club and intramural sports, as well as for University events, such as Commencement.
