Southwestern University’s English Department invites applications for a tenure-track position specializing in African American literature and culture in any period. Candidates who specialize in transatlantic Black studies are particularly welcome. Desired secondary areas of teaching expertise include creative writing in any genre and film studies. PhD must be in hand by August 2025.

Southwestern seeks candidates with a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates and pursuing scholarship in a liberal arts college. The successful applicant will teach a broad range of courses, including introductory surveys of American Literature and upper-level seminars in areas of research specialization, and will rotate required courses with other department members. These include: First-Year Seminar, Literary Methods, Literary Theory, and the senior Capstone. Our new colleague will also be able to offer courses that can contribute to our vibrant, interdisciplinary Race and Ethnicity Studies program and other interdisciplinary programs such as Feminist Studies, International Studies, and Latin American and Border Studies, as appropriate.

The teaching load is 3/2. Southwestern is proud to support the research programs of its faculty, offering a sabbatical opportunity for all pre-tenure faculty, as well as competitive annual funding for conference travel and summer archival research. Campus-wide responsibilities include advising students and university service.
