General Chemistry Placement & Preparation

Your success in General Chemistry starts with strong preparation, especially in math. If you plan to take General Chemistry, the ALEKS Math PPL assessment will be used to help you evaluate your readiness and guide your course placement.

Based on our experience and student success data, students who lack essential math skills often face greater challenges in General Chemistry.  We want you to succeed!

ALEKS Math PPL < 60

Students are encouraged to build foundational chemistry and quantitative skills. Students may continue working in ALEKS to improve their readiness before enrolling in General Chemistry 1. Advisors will determine an appropriate pathway to support student success.

• Students with stronger math preparation are significantly more likely to succeed in General Chemistry and feel confident in their problem-solving skills.
