In addition to tuition and eligible fees, veterans and dependents may also receive a book stipend of up to $1,000 per academic year and a monthly housing allowance payment (MHA).  The MHA is based on E-5 with dependents using our zip code of 78626.  MHA payments are disbursed by the VA after a month is completed, in the first week of the next month (ex. September’s MHA is paid in the first week of October).

You can sign up for our payment plan which will assist you in monthly payments. The payment plan breaks the bill into a 10-month cycle with the first payment due in June.

Nathan Tong, in our Financial Aid Office, assists our military affiliated students with exploring additional types of financial assistance.   Students receiving need-based assistance may find their award reduced as to not exceed the cost of attendance.    

Yes, Southwestern is a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program. The Yellow Ribbon program is a matching scholarship program between private schools and the VA for eligible CH 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill® beneficiaries.  

Institutions that voluntarily enter into a Yellow Ribbon Agreement with the VA choose the amount of tuition and fees that will be contributed. The VA will match that amount and issue payment directly to the institution.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is not a stand-alone program.  Students must have remaining entitlement (months/days) of Post 9/11 GI Bill® and an unmet tuition cost.  

Southwestern awards veterans with one upper-level FRA (fitness and recreational activity) credit, which fulfills the general education requirement of one FRA course.

Upon request, the official military transcript will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine if military coursework is eligible to receive transfer credit.  Veterans who have earned credits in approved military and service schools may be granted credit as indicted when such credit is appropriate to the degree programs of the students at SU. 

No, Southwestern University is not permitted to participate in the Hazlewood Act.  The Hazlewood Act is limited to public colleges in Texas.  SU students with both VA benefit eligibility and Hazlewood eligibility may choose to reserve their Hazlewood benefits for post-graduate study or summer transfer coursework at public colleges.
