Southwestern University, located in Georgetown has an immediate opening for an Assistant Controller. The Assistant Controller is responsible for the operation of the central accounting and financial control systems for the University. This is a full-time, fully benefited, exempt position who reports to the Associate Vice President for Finance and Accounting.

Primary Duties:

  • Coordinates the cash management and other treasury and cash flow functions.
  • Supervise Student Accounts personnel and all related functions, including student billing, student payments, payment plans, and all other student account functions.
  • Assist & Train Senior Accountant on all bank reconciliations.
  • Assist Controller with dual approval of daily banking transactions, including tuition ACH batch.
  • Approve & forward SU Trade Order Requests by Financial Analyst Program
  • Prepare monthly journal entries to record activity in all investment and endowment activity.
  • Set-up of new accounts for the endowment and endowment funded accounts (funds 4X & 12).
  • Review and approve all expenses charged to Fund 12 accounts.
  • Monitor special assets on a monthly basis: real estate, ranch property and mineral leases, including overseeing property taxes.
  • Review, categorize and reporting for newly-created, ongoing and terminated Gift Annuity Contracts.
  • Prepare Monthly Fundriver Reports and set-up of new accounts.
  • Prepare Endowment & Investment Reports - monthly reports and year-end leveling and financial statement notes
  • Prepare schedule for Change in Split Interest Values for annuities & then prepare year-end adjusting journal entry.
  • Prepare in-depth audit workpapers for Investment Market Values, including roll forward of Investments and Endowment.
  • Prepare extensive workpapers and schedules needed to provide additional information for financial statements and footnotes regarding investments/endowment, including redemption and liquidity information and upcoming and long-term commitments to Partnership investments.
  • Maintain SU’s records of due diligence for new investments – Partnership Agreements
  • Maintain records on capital calls, fees and other activity of Alternative Investments.
  • Assist in preparation of Pooled Income Distributions, Spending Analysis, & Lifting of Restrictions.
  • Research any litigation claims against others related to investments.
  • Answer inquiries related to accounting from faculty and staff.
  • Perform duties of the Controller in his/her absence.
  • Conduct special analyses and projects as requested.
  • Assist Associate Vice President for Finance & Accounting as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or BBA in Accounting.
  • Five years of hands-on experience in accounting or finance, with three years supervisory experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant License.
  • Strength in budgeting, accounting, and financial record keeping.
  • Ability to work individually and as a team to prepare bookkeeping and other entries to ensure the integrity of the books and records.
  • Ability to effectively utilize automated systems for financial and operational reporting, analysis, and control.
  • Ability to process information in a highly computerized, database management system.
  • Knowledge of financial operation of an educational organization with similar characteristics. This includes fund accounting, NACUBO standards, FASB rules and standards, and generally acceptable accounting principles.
  • Financial and operational analytic skills, with a business management orientation.
  • Ability to translate policy into procedures and to effectively implement those procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines and work effectively to meet priorities.
  • Supervisory and management skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including a strong work ethic.
