Southwestern University invites applications for the position of Coordinator of Science Facilities and Equipment. This a 12-month, in-person, 20 hours per week position without benefits. Reporting to the chairs of the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, this position supports the Natural Sciences Area faculty with basic lab equipment set-up and maintenance, supplies, general repairs, and other small construction projects as needed.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Oversee use, service, and maintenance of major teaching and research equipment.
  • Supervise installation and startup of major equipment.
  • Serve as a point of contact for instrument service contracts, renewals and troubleshooting issues.
  • Supervise storage and disposal of chemical and biological wastes for the shop and other departments within the Natural Sciences as needed. Order, receive and maintain all compressed gasses and cryogens.
  • Assist with planning, allocation, and use of space within science facilities.
  • Keep cryogens at safe levels for proper operation and performance of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) machine.
  • Provide general maintenance of the NMR including daily checking, cleaning, monthly shimming; work with service provider JEOL on annual maintenance or other issues that arise.
  • Fill liquid nitrogen dewars monthly for cell culture use.
  • Work with trained students utilizing the NMR; assist with troubleshooting samples as needed.
  • Perform eyewash and shower safety inspections at required intervals in Fondren Jones Science Building.
  • Annual and as needed maintenance of freezers, refrigerators and small lab equipment (defrosting, vacuuming, draining water baths, etc.).
  • Adhere to all safety standards and work practices established by the University and promptly report on-the-job accidents.
  • Maintain and care for all shop tools and shop equipment, including maintaining an updated inventory of tools and their locations.
  • Maintain and care for the shop facility, ensuring that it is kept clean and orderly.
  • Perform minor carpentry and electrical repairs as needed for Science Area faculty and students.
  • Help coordinate minor renovations and maintenance of science facilities.
  • Obtain and transport materials as needed to perform duties.

Job-related experience and skills:

  • General knowledge of wood working, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and shop tools.
  • Possess basic math skills.
  • Ability and desire to work with traditional age students in a residential, student-centered environment.
  • Possess the application of tact, diplomacy, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
  • Possess characteristics of honesty and dependability.
  • Ability to understand and willingly comply with the University’s safety regulations and safety related programs.
  • Ability to exercise flexibility regarding changing priorities.
  • Ability to follow and carry out work assignments in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work both independently, without close supervision, and also as a member of a team.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow written instructions or be able to request oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand product warning labels and directions for use of carpentry, electrical, and plumbing supplies and equipment or be able to request oral instructions.
  • Ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule.
  • Ability to reach, twist, bend, stoop, stand, kneel, handle, push/pull, and lift.
  • Ability to carry up to fifty pounds.
  • Ability to hear, see, and speak.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of two years of experience in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, or lab instrumentation work
  • Possess a valid Texas driver’s license in good standing with the Department of Motor Vehicles and meets standards of the University’s insurance carrier. This is a requirement for individuals in a position that requires driving on a regular basis, including golf carts and other University vehicles.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field
  • Five years of experience in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, or lab instrumentation work
