Glossary

The purpose of this glossary is to provide an understanding of terms, phrases, and unfamiliar words that are used on the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Center’s website. 

Belonging- an individual’s thoughts, experiences, and beliefs are valued and considered.

 

Community building- programs celebrating different cultures, such as heritage months.

 

Diversity- the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different race/ethnic and social backgrounds including but not limited to genders, sexual orientations, religions, socioeconomic status, abilities, body images, and veterans.

 

Education- presentation of student workshops for training and understanding of diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity (DIBE) concepts.

 

Equality- everyone is treated the same exact way, regardless of need or any other individual difference.

 

Equity- the quality of being fair and impartial (ie. everyone is provided with what they need to succeed.).

 

Historically marginalized- groups and communities experience discrimination and exclusion (social, political, and economic) because of unequal power relationships across economic, political, social, and cultural dimensions.

 

Inclusion- the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or intellectual disabilities and members of other minority groups (ie. thoughts, ideas, and perspectives are included in decision making.).

 

Justice- just behavior or treatment.
