Post-Retirement Health Care Benefits
Employees hired prior to July 1, 1996, who retire from the University with ten (10) or more years of uninterrupted service may be eligible to participate in the University’s post-retirement health benefit program. Employees hired on or after July 1, 1996, are not eligible for post-retirement health care benefits.
Employees rehired after July 1, 1996, will be eligible for post-retirement health care benefits only if they satisfied the eligibility requirements for such benefits prior to their termination of employment and subsequent rehire.
Effective January 1, 2014, the University’s post-retirement health benefit program is provided through a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA). Eligible retirees receive an employer-funded contribution to an HRA account, which may be used to reimburse qualifying health care expenses, including health insurance premiums. Eligibility for and participation in the HRA is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan.
Early Retirement Health Care Benefits
Employees who retire under the Regular Retirement Plan’s early retirement provisions may elect to continue coverage under the University’s Group Health Plan until age 65.
- Grandfathered Participants: Certain employees who retired prior to January 1, 2014, or who are otherwise eligible under prior plan terms, may receive a University contribution toward Group Health Plan premiums in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan or individual agreement.
- All Other Participants: Employees who retire on or after January 1, 2014, and who are not eligible for grandfathered benefits may elect to continue coverage under the Group Health Plan until age 65 but are responsible for the full cost of premiums, including any applicable dependent coverage.
Upon reaching age 65, retirees (and covered spouses, if applicable) are no longer eligible to participate in the Group Health Plan. At that time, eligible retirees may participate in the University’s post-retirement health benefit program (HRA), subject to plan terms.
The University reserves the right to modify, amend, or terminate its benefits programs, including retiree health benefits, at any time, with or without notice, to the extent permitted by applicable law.
