Transfer Credit & AP/IB
The Office of the Registrar evaluates official college transcripts and testing credit to award the appropriate Southwestern University academic credit.
Transfer Credit Requirements
Southwestern University awards credit for coursework completed at regionally accredited institutions that meets the following academic standards:
Grade Standards: Transfer credit is only awarded for letter grades of C- or higher. Courses with grades of Pass (P), Satisfactory (S), or Credit (CR) are not accepted.
Official Documentation: Transcripts must be received directly from the institution (by electronic delivery or postal mail), or delivered in a signed and sealed envelope. Unsealed or emailed copies of transcripts from students are considered unofficial.
Dual Credit: Credit can only be awarded from an official college transcript. SU cannot award credit based on a high school transcript.
Course Restrictions: Developmental, remedial, vocational, or technical courses will not transfer (ex: College Algebra, Trigonometry, or computer technology). A maximum of 2 fitness/physical education courses may transfer to SU. Course numbers on the SU List of Pre-Approved Transfer Courses from Texas Community Colleges can be taken online through Summer 2027. Submit the Transfer Credit Approval Form to seek written permission from the appropriate department chair for any other courses to be taken online.
The Final 32 Credits: You must complete your final 32 credits at SU. Approved Study Abroad programs are exempt from this requirement. To take a course elsewhere during this time, you must submit the Transfer Credit Approval Form to receive pre-approval from the Registrar, are limited to two courses with a maximum of 8 credits, and need Department Chair permission for major/minor courses.
Prospective students seeking Transfer Admission: We encourage you to discuss course selection with the SU Office of Admission before selecting additional courses. Contact our Jake Harp, Assistant Director of Transfer Recruitment at harpj@southwestern.edu.
