The program cost includes:

• $550 non-refundable deposit
• 8 credits of tuition
• Pre-departure materials
• Room and two meals per weekday with a host family
• Laundry service once a week
• Airport pick-up and ground transportation to and from the airport
• IES Abroad organized excursions including transportation, hotel, breakfast, some meals, entrance fees
• Dedicated staff support for the program, including an IES Abroad resident director, with other staff as needed.
• Health insurance coverage for the duration of the program

The program cost does not include:

• International airfare
• Baggage fees and travel insurance
• Passport and visa expenses
• Additional meals (all meals on weekends, lunch and dinner during excursions)
• Local transportation
• Personal expenses: toiletries, activities, snacks, personal travel, souvenirs, etc.

All students will take the following courses:

SPA15-154: Spanish II with Prof. Noelia Cigarroa-Cooke (4 credits)

AND

SPA15-164: Spanish III - taught by a local instructor (4 credits)

Spanish II and III are the final two courses in the Language and Culture sequence at Southwestern University. The main objective of language study is to develop basic communicative skills in Spanish, focusing on the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Another important goal is to develop knowledge about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Class time is devoted primarily to communicative activities requiring consistent participation and interaction with classmates. Since this course is taught in Spain, students will be taking advantage of the study abroad setting with assignments and activities related to interactions and observations in the community, use of current periodicals, television programs, and other forms of media, and other cultural experiences. The classes will be conducted in Spanish.

Students must have completed the language prerequisite of Spanish I, or the equivalent, in order to be eligible for these courses. Upon completion of this program, students will have met the Southwestern foreign language requirement.

While in Granada, students will live with carefully selected host families who will provide students with three meals per day and laundry service once a week. Two students will be assigned to each family. A welcome and a farewell meal are included in the program fee. Breakfast is included at all hotels. Students are responsible for all other meals.

The program begins with arrival in Madrid. Students will stay in a hotel their first two nights, and then travel to Granada the following day where they will attend orientation, meet their host families and move into their housing. There will be a walking tour of Granada and welcome dinner the first night.

Organized excursions will include a weekend excursion to Sevilla (including a bike tour, guided tour of the Cathedral and Royal Alcazars) and the program will conclude with a couple of days in Madrid (including a guided walking tour of central Madrid, a visit to Reina Sofia, Prado Museum, and El Escorial Monastery). The program will wrap up with a farewell dinner and a group return to the airport in Madrid.
