Dr. Hilary Janysek is an active flutist and educator specializing in entrepreneurship, chamber music, and music history. As an orchestral flutist, she has performed with the McKinney Philharmonic Orchestra, the Temple Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, and the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra. A leader in Flute choirs, she has been a member of the Austin Flute Choir, the Flutes on the Bayou, Deja Flute Ensemble, and the Brazos Breeze Flute Choir. Additionally, has been featured as a soloist with the Ball State Symphony Orchestra, the Texas State University Orchestra, America’s Hometown Band, The Austin Flute Choir, and the Victoria Bach Festival. As an active chamber musician and clinician, Dr. Janysek has collaboratively performed and presented at events such as the College Music Society Conference, the National Flute Association (NFA) Convention, the Texas Flute Society Festival, and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. Dr. Janysek currently serves as the Past President and Young Artist Coordinator of the Austin Flute Society and the Chair of the NFA’s Flute Clubs Committee. As the chair, she has coordinated and collaborated on over 10 convention and virtual events, published three blogs, and created a database of flute choir music which highlights new and diverse composers. 

In 2017, she won the National Association for Music Merchants President’s Innovation Award to attend the NAMM Conference and promote music entrepreneurship. Her dissertation research included a qualitative study on the entrepreneurship and collaboration of successful chamber ensembles. She has since presented workshops at Texas State University, The Texas Flute Society Festival and the Austin Flute Society festival encouraging entrepreneurial thoughts and actions.

Dr. Janysek is currently pursuing a certificate in Positive Psychology, with which she will provide coaching sessions and strategies for musicians and students to reduce anxiety and build a healthy mindset that is necessary for a career in music.

An enthusiastic educator, Dr. Janysek has built a successful private studio of over 30 students based in the Austin area, in addition to her position at Southwestern. Her students have advanced to region, area, and state band competitions, have placed in local Young Artist Competitions, and have placed in the NFA’s soloist competition. 

Dr. Janysek earned a Doctor of Arts degree in Flute Performance from Ball State University (BSU) in December 2018. There, she studied with Dr. Mihoko Watanabe, held graduate assistantships in Music History and Music Education, and completed a certificate in Entrepreneurial Music. She received her Master of Music Degree from BSU (2015) and her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Texas State University (2011), where she studied with Dr. Adah Toland Jones.
