Southwestern University invites applications for the position of Academic Success Coordinator. Housed within the Center for Academic Success and reporting to the Director of Academic Success, this position provides supplemental academic support services within a faculty advising system. Success in this position includes: increasing student engagement in Captain’s Academy (first-generation student outreach and academic support program) to further assist with retention efforts, recruitment of quality Peer Academic Mentors (PAMs) and oversight of consistent programming conducted by mentors, and regular connection with campus partners to address the academic needs of students.

Primary Duties

  • Lead Captain’s Academy program planning and implementation.
  • Manage the Peer Academic Mentor Program, including supervision of the student mentors.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Advising and Retention on retention-focused initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Hispanic Student Success Coordinator on Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) initiatives.
  • Coordinate and manage the exit interview process for departing students (sophomore-senior) as well as the Leave of Absence process.
  • Manage daily walk-in student traffic.
  • Advise a regular caseload of students.
  • Participate in various University committees.
  • Assist with general projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

 

Educational:

  • Bachelor’s degree

 

Job related experience and skills:

  • Minimum of two years working in a college setting, including undergraduate work in academic support or student life.
  • Experience advising/counseling students.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including a strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and effective organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to adhere to the University’s Core Values.
  • Possess excellent interaction and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Knowledge, understanding and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.
  • Understanding of and commitment to liberal arts education, including the ability to relate to a liberal arts facility.
  • Ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule.
  • Ability to respect confidential information.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

 

Physical / Mental

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to reach, twist, bend, stoop, stand, kneel, handle, push/pull, and lift and carry up to ten pounds.
  • Ability to hear, see, and speak.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience with student retention efforts.
  • Experience with student success initiatives.
  • Understanding of first-generation college experience.
  • Involvement as a student or administrator in first-generation programs.
  • Program development experience.
