Through internships, Southwestern students can develop 21st-century career-readiness skills, such as the ability to think effectively, tackle complex and unscripted problems, view problems from multiple viewpoints, adapt, collaborate, and innovate. These skills prepare SU graduates not only for personal success but also to contribute to their communities and the world.

At least 60% of SU students benefit from internship experiences, and research shows that internship experience is the single biggest factor related to gaining employment after graduation.

Internships provide a great way for you to gain experience and “test the fit” of the many career options you may consider. You can narrow down your areas of interest and develop the relevant skills that employers in your field seek.

Internships can take the form of academic (for credit) or experience-only internships. Often completed in the junior or senior year, an academic internship is typically more rigorous and provides academic credit toward your degree program. Experience-only internships can be completed at any time, provided you meet the requirements set forth by the organization offering the internship. Students can also receive funding to subsidize unpaid or low-paying internships through the Funded Internship Program.

Mackenzie Follis

Outstanding Intern of the Week - Mackenzie Follis

This week’s Outstanding Intern is senior Psychology major Mackenzie Follis (@macfo_) Over the summer, Mackenzie served as a Family Advocate Intern with the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center.

The internship began by shadowing other Family Advocates, and eventually Mackenzie was able to begin the process of working with caregivers to explain all the resources available at the CAC as well as following up with them as needed after leaving the center.

Mackenzie says, “This opportunity helped me gain not only a deeper understanding of the various forms of child abuse, but how to help educate others of its harsh realities. This internship helped me realize that I will continue on my path of getting a master’s degree in counseling in hopes of helping adolescents and teens through various abnormal psychological daily symptoms.” Congrats MacKenzie!

Outstanding Intern of the Week - Brandan Garza

@brandangarza is our first Outstanding Intern of the Week this fall! Brandan interned with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce this past summer and was able to work on a marketing project for the TX FAME program which helps individuals get an Associate’s degree while working for a Bexar County employer.

Brandan says, “I was given the responsibility of creating marketing tools and content for this program so that it could reach potential candidates through the TX FAME social media outlets and website. Through our rebranding efforts of the website and social media pages, my team was able to transform the previous marketing design into a more user-friendly and appealing platform for high school students.

The connections I made during this work experience are extremely valuable as I start to look for full-time career opportunities in the upcoming months of my senior year at Southwestern University.” Congrats Brandan!
