The International Studies program equips students with a broad understanding of other societies, cultures, and states. Our interdisciplinary curriculum investigates a wide variety of global systems—economic, social, religious, intellectual, political, aesthetic, and environmental—to gain insight into complex global challenges.

International Studies graduates are prepared for careers in business, government, non-governmental organizations, cultural heritage and preservation, education, politics, and law.

Majors take an introductory course in global, international, and/or comparative topics and methods. Students select one of three thematic global tracks to best suit their goals and interests.

  • Global Politics and Economy courses focus on large structures, systems, and institutions.
  • Global Society and Culture courses focus on people and communities.
  • Global Justice courses are courses from either track that also have a Social Justice tag.

All majors pursue foreign language proficiency, study abroad, and conduct research in a capstone seminar.

International Studies is one of the Paideia Minors. Paideia provides intentional opportunities for students to integrate various academic disciplines and experiences, empowering them to develop versatile analytical abilities that lead them to become creative problem solvers who are well equipped to tackle complex issues. Paideia is not a traditional program but provides innovative, structured pathways that enable the acquisition of these invaluable skills.

All SU students are encouraged to graduate with Paideia Distinction by making Paideia a formal part of their studies. This requires completing either one of the Paideia Minors (or two High-Impact Experiences) and successfully completing a Paideia Seminar.

Graduation with Paideia Distinction formally recognizes students’ cultivated curiosity to learn, integrate multiple viewpoints, and create change. The Paideia skills that students develop make SU graduates highly sought-after by recruiters, employers, and graduate programs.
