Planning for Law School
Use your undergraduate years to begin shaping your professional identity and exploring whether a career in law is the right path for you. Faculty Pre-Law Advisor Dr. Joseph Hower and the Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD) are here to guide you—helping you weigh your options, make informed choices about law school, and navigate every step of the application process. You can reach them at su-prelaw@southwestern.edu.
The most successful students are proactive in strengthening their profiles. A great place to start is the American Bar Association’s article on Preparation for Legal Education, which outlines the skills and knowledge essential for success in law school and the legal profession. You can find it here: ABA Preparation for Legal Education.
Applying to Law School
A good, complete application requires proper planning! A complete application consists of five main items: your undergraduate GPA; your LSAT score; the application itself; your resume and your recommendation letters. Some applicants will also include addenda to discuss grade trends, standardized testing conditions or criminal records. To present yourself in the best light, you should begin preparations early in your chose application cycle. The following strategies should help you get started.
