“To Survive And Excel: The Story Of Southwestern University, 1840-2000”

In 2006, University Historian, Dr. Bill Jones (professor emeritus of history), wrote this 559-page book about Southwestern’s storied history. He writes, “Based on extensive research and rich with vivid detail, To Survive and Excel: The Story of Southwestern University, 1840-2000 narrates the history of Southwestern University in Georgetown from the time of the Republic of Texas to the present while providing a unique perspective on the development of the Lone Star state.”

Thanks to the staff in the A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library at Southwestern, Dr. Jones’s book is available in PDF version (and is searchable) for all to learn about the history of the University. 

Career & Professional Development For Alumni

Southwestern’s Center for Career & Professional Development has a variety of services and opportunities for alumni. 

  • At least one free 30-minute individual career consultation (additional consultations available, schedule permitting).
  • Free self-assessment of personality, interests and values.
  • Unlimited access to the Center for Career & Professional Development extensive website.
  • Free access to HireSU, the Center’s online job board and resume referral system where all full-time, part-time and internship positions advertised to Southwestern University are posted.
  • Access to on-campus recruiting for full-time jobs.
  • Access to programs and workshops on a space-available basis.
Legacy Link Program

Southwestern families create a linkage between generations of alumni. As a University, we recognize legacies as the children, grandchildren or siblings of our alumni.

The Offices of Admission and University Relations will celebrate the milestone birthdays of our youngest legacies - at birth, age 5, age 10 and age 16. Enroll your children or grandchildren in the Legacy Link Program and the University will send them Southwestern presents in these years. In 2015, the gifts included:

  • Birth: 12-month old Southwestern Pirates t-shirt
  • Age 5: Southwestern Pirates lunch bag
  • Age 10: Southwestern Pirates draw string backpack
  • Age 16: Southwestern Pirates lanyard

Gifts for newborns will be mailed upon enrollment in the Legacy Link Program. Gifts for children turning ages 5, 10 and 16 will receive their presents in the month of August, prior to their birthday. We will contact you prior to the mailing to confirm your desire for them to receive that milestone gift.

Pirate Party Packs

Planning an alumni gathering with your friends? Let Southwestern know and we’ll send you an SU Party Pack (SU goodies: 10 cups, 10 koozies and 10 eye patches.). In return, we ask that you share with us who is planning to attend your Southwestern party. Email Alumni and Parent Relations to request your Southwestern Party Pack. Please allow at least two weeks for delivery of items. We appreciate that you are engaging classmates and friends by continuing their Southwestern Experience. 

Alumni Pirate ID Cards

Alumni living locally may receive Pirate ID Cards to utilize campus facilities during the academic year. ID cards provide access to campus resources, including the recreation facilities within the Corbin J. Robertson Center and library resources in the A. Frank Smith Jr. Library Center.

You may request a Pirate Card by submitting a request form . Your Pirate Card must be picked up in person at the Information Desk in the Smith Library Center.

Sou’wester Yearbooks

You’d be surprised at how many people stop by the Schrum Alumni Center (located in the Roy and Lillie Cullen Building) and the University’s Special Collections (located in the A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center) to flip through yearbooks (dating back to the early 1900s). GREAT NEWS! Now you can search the pages of yearbooks at your own leisure.

Historical Alumni Directory

Often times, we have historians, family members and friends of our alumni come through asking questions about members of the Southwestern community. The Historical Alumni Directory (1844-1920) has a list of alumni who attend Southwestern and the four root colleges.
