Abstract Specifications
The Call for Proposal requests a 150-200 word abstract. The abstract must include sufficient information for reviewers to judge the nature and significance of the topic, the adequacy of the investigative strategy, the nature of the results, and the conclusions. It should summarize the substantive results of the work and not merely list topics to be discussed, and be both accessible and engaging. An abstract is an outline/brief summary of your work. It should have an intro, body, and conclusion. It is a well-developed paragraph, should be exact in wording, and must be understandable to a wide audience. Abstracts highlight major points of your research and explain why your work is important; what your purpose was; how you went about your project; what you learned; and what you concluded. If there are symbols within your abstract, they may not submit properly. If this is a concern for you, please copy the title and abstract portion of your proposal and e-mail in a word file (.docx) or share via GoogleDoc with Dr. Jessica S. Hower, howerj@southwestern.edu
Abstract Writing Assistance
Reach out to the Debby Ellis Writing Center (DEWC) if you need assistance in writing an abstract to submit. The DEWC can introduce students to the basic conventions of abstract writing, provide models from prior Research and Creative Works Symposium, and break down the parts of an abstract. You may send your abstract to DEWC if you would like peer feedback on your abstract prior to submission. Please contact Maurice Wilson, Director of the Debby Ellis Writing Center (wilson22@southwestern.edu)
