Schedule of Events

This is the tentative student schedule. Note that there is a separate schedule for parents and other guests. You and your guests will receive a finalized schedule upon check-in at the event.

Tentative Student Schedule

DAY 1

9:00 - 9:45 a.m.

Check in

Your room is ready for you, (not that you’ll be spending much time there)! At check-in, you will receive your room key and Pirate swag. Then, drop off your luggage in your room, so you can set sail on your Sprog voyage. You’ll get your PirateCard; don’t lose it, Matey!

9:45 - 10:00 am

Meet Your Fellow Pirates

Your Pirate adventure starts here! Kick off your Sprog experience with 150 of your new best mates. Remember: everyone is in the same boat! Engage in fun activities that will help you quickly make new friends, before heading to the first session.

10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

First Gathering With Your Orientation Leader

You could potentially meet your new best friend at this session! Your Orientation Leader will guide you through interactive activities that will introduce you to your Sprog cohort and prepare you for the days to come.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. 

Welcome & Shaping Your SU Experience
University staff will welcome you and your families to SU. A member of the professional advising team will discuss the curriculum, academic support, and resources to help you begin a successful and engaging journey at SU.

12:00 - 1:15 p.m.

Lunch

At lunch, you will have the opportunity to have lunch with and get to know your  Maiden Voyage team.

P.S. If you haven’t picked up your Pirate Card yet, make sure to grab it at the Library during lunch.

1:15 - 2:15 p.m.

Understanding the Curriculum with Advisors and OLs

Academic Advisors will help you get your sea-legs and dive into the University’s curriculum in preparation for your course registration process.

2:30 - 3:45 p.m.

Maiden Voyage

Embark on your maiden voyage via a good ‘ol fashioned field day–Pirate style! Join your Sprog group as you compete in friendly competition with a series of upbeat interactions and games sure to shiver your timbers! Don’t worry; no one has to walk the plank.

4:00 - 4:45 pm

Ask Anything! Student Panel with OLs  

In this students-only session, no question is off-limits! Connect with current students, and get the inside scoop on the daily life of a Southwestern Pirate.

4:45 - 5:15 pm

Know Your Berth

What’s a berth, you may ask? The sleeping quarters on a ship are called a berth. Learn how you sign up for your room and provide roommate preferences. Also, you’ll learn what you can bring to your berth to make it your new home!

 

6:00 - 6:30 pm

Day 1 Wrap-up with OLs

Join your Orientation Leader for a quick check-in to reflect on your day and prepare for Sprog Day 2.

 

6:30 - 8:00 pm

Find My Friends Dinner

Finding community is an essential part of finding your home at SU. This dinner will allow you to connect with fellow Pirates with common interests and expand your circle of friends!

 

8:00 - 10:00 pm

Nightlife at SU

There’s always something fun happening on campus! Get a taste of nightlife at SU, and choose your own adventure—TBD on the specific activities available.

P.S. If you did not take the ALEKS math placement test before Sprog, this is when you’ll need to do it. Don’t miss out on the fun; be sure to take ALEKS before Sprog!

 

 

DAY 2

7:00 am

Wake-up Call!

All hands on deck! We won’t make you swab the deck, but you do need to get moving.

7:30 - 8:30 am

Residence Hall Checkout

Collect all your personal items from your residence hall rooms and turn in your key with a staff member on the first floor by 9am. We will be able to provide limited luggage storage for those who do not have a vehicle on campus in which to place your belongings.

8:00 - 8:45 am

Breakfast

Make sure you check out of your residence hall room before going to breakfast!

9:00 - 9:45 am

Panel with the Professors

Teaching and learning is at the core of the Southwestern Experience . Engage with faculty to learn more about our unique educational approach. Whether you have questions about the curriculum, majors/minors, or high-impact experiences (study abroad, research, internships, etc.) our professors are here to guide you!

9:45 am - 11:00 am

Residence Hall Tours

Residence hall tours are specifically designed for those new Pirates wishing to explore their housing options. Staff will be available to answer questions related to each residence hall.

11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Billing, Payments, and Financial Aid, Oh My!

Even Pirates have to pay bills. This information session covers billing and payments, waivers, financial aid, and how to access financial information.

12:00 - 1:00 pm

Lunch with Your Orientation Leader

1:00 - 2:30 pm

Group Advising

You will meet with your first-year advisor who will help you navigate through degree programs, fall courses, and ways to get involved.

2:45 - 4:00 pm

Registration for Fall Courses

Now that your Pirate training is complete, you’re almost at your destination! You will come to the labs to officially register for Fall classes with the help of our team of advisors, OLs, and other staff. Once you’re registered and complete the evaluation, you’re free to go home.
