Academic Success
Services for Students with Disabilities
Southwestern University is committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to University programs and services. Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) are managed as part of the Center for Academic Success, which is located on the first floor of the Prothro Center for Lifelong Learning.
Getting Started
Students may be eligible to receive accommodations based on the nature and functional limitations of a documented disability.
Students with disabilities who require accommodations to receive equal access should begin by completing the online Student Application.
Establishing Eligibility
In order to establish eligibility for accommodations, the student will need to provide current, comprehensive documentation that establishes the diagnosis/es and describes the impact on major life activities. The Associate Director of Academic Success (Associate Director):
- Determines students’ eligibility through a review process based on information provided by the student in the online application and documentation received in regards to the student’s disability;
- Approves reasonable accommodations intended to reduce or eliminate barriers to equal access; and
- Collaborates with Southwestern students, faculty, and staff to ensure that no qualified students with disabilities are denied the benefit of, excluded from participation in, or otherwise subjected to discrimination.
Key Things to Know
- Accommodations are intended to reduce or eliminate barriers to equal access and promote equal opportunities; they do not waive academic requirements considered essential.
- Accommodations are not a guarantee for student success.
- A temporary illness or impairment (e.g., recovering from surgery) is not considered a disability, but the student experiencing such an illness/impairment still may be eligible for temporary accommodations.
