Observed from September 15 to October 15 in the United States, Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes and honors the rich culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic communities. Originally focused on Spanish-speaking countries due to their independence days coinciding with September 15th, the celebration has since evolved. Southwestern University has expanded the observance to include non-Spanish speaking Latin American nations like Haiti and Brazil, emphasizing the diversity and richness of Latinidad. This inclusive approach recognizes unique cultural contributions, languages, and histories, fostering unity, education, and a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted tapestry of Latin American cultures.

Library Displays: September 15 - October 15
The “Rostros y Almas/Faces and Souls” exhibit began in 1992 when photographer Mary Jessie Garza and co-curators Mary Visser and Lupita Barrera Bryant sought to create an exhibit that displayed the work of Latina women throughout Central Texas. The original exhibit displayed 31 photographs of the women paired with portrait descriptions. It debuted at the 1992 Brown Symposium held at Southwestern University, titled “Discoveries of America.” This campus event recognized the Quincentennial of Columbus’ arrival to the Americas.
The photographs will be on display on the second floor of the Smith Library Center.
