Academic Success

Meet the Peer Academic Mentors

Peer Academic Mentors support all Southwestern University students with a variety of college success skills through one-on-one coaching and workshops.

What We Do

Mentors are a source of academic support for fellow students throughout their time at SU. We work with students to develop effective study skills and strategies on an individual basis, design and facilitate academic skills workshops, refer students to campus life support services, and guide students through short- and long-term planning.

Been there, done that:

As upper-level students, the Peer Mentors have experiences both in and out of the classroom that help relate to the students they work with. They are eager to answer your questions, hear your concerns, or just chat!

Advice to my first-year self: “I am glad that I explored campus activities throughout my first-year. I tried out a lot of clubs, which helped me figure out which activities I wanted to focus my time on. I also went to most of the office hours offered by my professors, which helped me get comfortable with going to office hours whenever I needed help.”

Advice to my first-year self:The advice I would give to myself is not to stress too much and to focus on creating a good schedule. It’s okay to ask for help. I wish I had understood earlier how important it is to manage my time well and stay organized without becoming easily overwhelmed. I’ve also learned that it’s okay to take a step back, relax, and give myself a moment to breathe.”

Joshua Marquez (he/him/his)

Advice to my first-year self:Remember to learn with purpose, go beyond just learning for the next exam and be mindful of what topics strike your interest for you to pursue further in the future.”
