Thanks for your interest in Southwestern University as a possible filming location. The Office of Marketing and Communications (Marcom) is responsible for evaluating all filming requests and processing all required paperwork including location permits, insurance certificates, and fees. We also manage logistics and supervise film shoots.
Commercials and advertisements. Southwestern University allows the filming of commercials or advertisements on university property on a case by case basis.
Other filming projects that require university permission and a film location permit include, but are not limited to:
- Feature films, short films, documentaries, television programs, reality TV, and independent films.
- Some still photography (Please check with Marcom before your planned visit).
Southwestern reserves the right to refuse or revoke permission to film or photograph on campus for any reason.
In no circumstances can for-profit companies use photos or video of the Southwestern campus that may imply university support for a product or service.
News Media Filming. Photography and filming by conventional news media outlets does not require a permit, however, we ask that you notify Marcom before coming to campus. If you are a news media outlet and have questions or require assistance in coordinating a video or photo shoot, please contact Marcom at sucommunications@southwestern.edu or 512.863.1771.
Filming Locations on Campus
Scenic Southwestern University boasts many settings that cater to a wide range of cinematic needs, from serene natural landscapes to Romanesque architecture buildings to Animal House-style frat houses. We have a mix of old and new-school lecture halls perfect for modern and classic sets. Plus, an expansive athletics competition surfaces for sports-related stories.
Lastly, where else can you find a vast expanse of untamed, beautiful land reminiscent of the grandeur found in the Yellowstone Series in the Austin area? Fortunately, SU possesses an untouched 500-acre plot of land that offers the perfect backdrop for your Texas productions.
