Neil Calnan, a Houston attorney, was the self-declared strategist and hatchet-man for the “white hats.” He was first vice chair of the Texas Young Republicans (YR) in 1963-66 and ran for multiple offices later, generally losing by a few votes.

Neil Calnan’s collection contains six (6) boxes. George Darby was an active participant in the Young Republican clubs in Texas. He attended the University of Texas and was a leader of the UT, frequently communicating with GOP leaders and campaigning. He became a well known name around the Texas Young Republicans and eventually the larger GOP as a whole. He was YR state chairman from 1963–1967. He became a San Antonio businessman.

The collection of Darby papers consists of five boxes. The majority of the materials included in the boxes are correspondence within the Texas Young Republican Federation (TYRF). There are many names that appear frequently and those are noted on the folders within each box. Some key players are: Neil Calnan, Linda Underwood, Glenn Looney, Jim Oberwetter, Albert Fay, Peter O’Donnell, John Tower, George H. W. Bush, Dick Teel, Marvin Collins, Gary Toothaker, Lewin Plunkett, Donald E. ‘Buz’ Lukens, and Wick Allison, and Richard A Viguerie.

Linda Underwood (d. 2013) was a very active participant in the Texas Young Republicans. She received the nomination for the “Outstanding Young Republican Woman in the Nation” award in 1967 and won the award for her participation and work on various campaigns and political activities with many different parts of the GOP as a whole. Around 1967 she moved to Washington DC where she was a member of Richard Nixon’s transition team and went on to hold other political positions. Underwood returned to Texas in 1970 where she remained active in Republican Party politics and government. A copy of her obituary can be found with the printed finding aid.

The scrapbook is housed in one half-size document box. It is in the original binding and order and has not been altered. It is short, but contains information about Underwood’s political career and the work she has done for the Republican Party. The pieces included span from 1965 – 1967.
