My series of large abstract and figurative drawings and paintings, “Candid,” are

conceived intuitively: the ideas are dependent on my mood and inspired by Romantic

image-making. The two bodies of work are related by the ideas involved in their

inception as well as the process of their making. I rely on the immediate environment

and its influence on my psyche to create my work - choosing anything from my favorite

cartoons to my stress level as inspiration. Simultaneously I am mindful of the notions of

the Romantics, who created unsettling images by manipulating the gesture of the figure

and highly contrasting colors to create dramatic environments. I also find pleasure in the

ephemeral aspects of Romanticism, produced through lightness of touch and lyricism of

mark. Varied combinations of these ideas drive the image while I work.
