I chose to study psychology and French while at Southwestern because I have always been interested in those two areas and felt that they would provide a good balance as I pursued my undergraduate degree.
The French courses I took with Professors Chamier, Mathieu, and Prevots provided great opportunities for me to study the French language, learn about French culture, and meet other students. I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Aix-en-Provence the summer after my junior year, which was a great experience and one that my French professors supported whole-heartedly.
Following graduation, I completed a master’s degree in counseling at the University of Houston. I am now working on my PhD in Counseling Psychology at Texas A&M University. Cultural competence is a large part of Counseling Psychology, and I firmly believe that my experiences at Southwestern, especially my French studies, have enabled me to conduct culturally sensitive research and to work well with clients from various cultural backgrounds.
