Southwestern University senior Sarah Doroshow ’25 has earned the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. An aspiring clinical psychologist from Royse City, Texas, Doroshow plans to graduate this December with a major in psychology and a minor in Spanish.
With the scholarship, Doroshow will be attending the SU London Program this fall. SU London is a 15-week, 16-credit program available to Southwestern University students who have attained at least sophomore status. The curricular focus of the program changes every fall, with 2025 focusing on psychology and mathematics.
While in London, Doroshow will take Associate Professor of Psychology Carin Perilloux’s “Evolutionary Psychology” and “Big Questions in Psychology” courses, along with Associate Professor of Mathematics John Ross’ “Big Questions in Mathematics” class, and a “British Life and Culture” course taught by local British faculty. In addition, Doroshow will volunteer at a London-based research lab focused on autism, a position that aligns with her personal and academic research interests.
“The London program is a unique opportunity for me to complete my undergraduate degree while furthering my research experience,” Doroshow said. “The UK is at the forefront of advancing autism research to historically underrepresented communities. Studying in London, a global leader in this field, will provide invaluable academic and cultural experiences that I will bring back to inform my future research and advocacy. I’m very grateful and excited to take courses with familiar SU faculty and students while gaining hands-on experience in an environment directly aligned with my academic and professional goals.”
Outside of the classroom, the SU London Program offers students cultural excursions to iconic British landmarks, such as Bletchley Park, Buckingham Palace, The British Museum, and Hyde Park, as well as group trips to Cambridge, Oxford, and Edinburgh.
The Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students receiving Federal Pell Grants to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. Named after the late Congressman Benjamin A. Gilman of New York, the program aims to broaden the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.
With the award, Doroshow adds her name to Southwestern’s lengthy history with the Gilman Scholarship. Since the program’s inception in 2001, a total of 43 SU students have now had the opportunity to study abroad thanks to the aid of a Gilman Scholarship. In February, Leslie Gabino Benitez ’27 and Elisa Dierksmeier ’26 earned Gilman Scholarships, marking the sixth consecutive year that at least one SU student has earned participation in the program, and the fourth consecutive year in which multiple SU students have been selected.
Through the program, Southwestern students have been able to study abroad in 32 different countries across six continents, including Australia, China, Costa Rica, India, New Zealand, Rwanda, South Africa, Spain, and Uruguay, among others.
Supported by the U.S. Congress, the Gilman Scholarship is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and is aided in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
