First-year and sophomore students who have not traveled outside the US are encouraged to apply. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in various activities, which could include:

  • Study alongside leading academics and professionals
  • Experiencing cultural and social events
  • Visiting UK cultural sites and areas of scenic beauty
  • Meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Becoming an ambassador for studying in the UK, for the Fulbright Commission and their host institution(s)

The Institute costs covered by the Fulbright Commission and its partners include roundtrip airfare, tuition and fees of host institution, accommodation, and possibly a small daily allowance for meals.

Transfer credit / SU Study Abroad application: Participants are also eligible to receive credit to transfer back to SU; therefore, applicants must complete a brief SU Study Abroad application prior to applying for the Institutes:

  1. Using your SU username and password, log in to Via, SU’s searchable study abroad directory at  https://southwestern.via-trm.com/.
  2. Under “Explore Programs” look up “Fulbright: UK Summer Institutes”
  3. Click on “Apply Now” and follow the steps to complete the application
  4. Once your application is approved, complete the Fulbright application through the website below. You must complete BOTH steps.

Other specific criteria: Be a U.S. citizen or national. Be at least 18 years old. Have at least a 3.7 GPA. Have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Institute. Not participate in any other study abroad during the summer of the Institute.
