Barry Goldwater Scholarship
National scholarship in the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics to identify and support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming the US’ next generation of research leaders in these fields. Scholarships entail up to $7,500 a year to help cover costs associated with tuition, mandatory fees, books, room and board.

Other specific criteria: Up to four students may be nominated by SU annually. Apply as a sophomore or junior. Must intend to pursue a research career in a natural sciences, mathematics or engineering, have 3.0+ GPA (the Goldwater website notes, however, that “in recent Goldwater competitions, GPAs have ranged from 3.3 to 4.95 on a 4.0 scale”; and be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a permanent resident. Pre-med (MD/PhD) students can apply if research is a central part of their career goals (research in medicine, though, is not supported). Additionally, winners of this award have typically completed at least one significant research experience with an accompanying output, like a publication and/or national presentation. While those are not expressly articulated criteria, prospective applicants should evaluate their experiences accordingly in deciding whether to apply.
