During the Bicentennial celebration surrounding 1976, many Texas cities sought status as an official “Bicentennial Community,” and over half of the material in this series is correspondence between Senator Tower and officials of various Texas cities who sought this official status for their community. While most of the correspondence consists of letters from Tower offering to recommend cities to the decision making committee or letters/telegrams congratulating them on achieving official status, occasionally materials describing the details of a community’s celebration are included. General files, including microfilm, contain correspondence relating to celebrations in Texas, Bicentennial publications, memoranda, schedules for distributing films and other materials. A small file deals with a funding controversy surrounding a San Antonio seminar regarding social pressures on the gay community.
