Workshops

Each year we offer a variety of social justice and diversity workshops.

All workshops are 60 minutes; however, they can be extended based on the group’s needs.

These workshops include the following:

  • Cultural Competency: The purpose of the cultural competency workshop is to better understand cultural identity, self-awareness, systemic and systematic barriers, inclusive language, bias, and stereotyping. The training is designed to improve cultural competency by increasing the knowledge and skills of individuals in the Southwestern community.
  • Difficult Dialogues: The Difficult Dialogues workshop helps participants increase their ability and skills by encouraging and facilitating open communication on difficult topics. The training will assist in providing concrete skills on how to create safe, supportive spaces to talk about sensitive topics, work through differences, and build consensus.
  • Identity Wheel Workshop: The identity wheel workshop is a visual aid to highlight different ways people define themselves. The activity assists in narrowing in on terms and concepts that speak to how one feels about oneself and helps put into words our most deeply held concepts of self.
  • Interactive Icebreakers: The icebreakers are customizable to the audience. Materials will be discussed with the requestor.
  • Invisibility/Visible disabilities and Diversity: The Invisibility and Diversity workshop highlights disabilities such as mental health concerns, chronic illness, and physical disabilities, that are often retracted in the conversations about inclusion. The purpose of this workshop is to better understand how to support an inclusive environment for individuals who are abled differently.
  • Microaggressions: The Microaggressions and Recognizing Bias workshop helps participants define microaggressions, understand their impact, and learn ways to respond. This workshop will also discuss implicit biases that impact behavior and actions towards others. Participants will learn about where biases come from, and how to increase self-awareness and equity.
  • Power and Privilege: The Power and Privilege interactive workshop provides a broader definition of privilege and the benefits of identities. Participants will be asked to reflect on their own privilege(s) and explore various ways that they can use their power and privilege to become advocates for others.
  • Safe Space Training: Safe Spaces will ensure that folks are knowledgeable about all the nuances in our culture today as it relates to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community. The purpose of the training is to better identify and avoid microaggressions and other intentional or unintentional speech or actions. Participants will receive a sticker to display indicating that the person has gone through a Safe Zone training and is open to talking about and being supportive of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • White fragility: White fragility is a presentation and discussion that explores the discomfort and defensiveness on the part of a white person when confronted by information about racial inequality and injustice.
