Endowed Funds
Endowments provide perpetual support and financial stability for the University to enhance the things that make Southwestern so unique and special. Endowment funds can be established to support scholarships, high-impact experiences for students, faculty research/creative works, faculty positions, academic departments, athletic teams, fine arts initiatives, and several other institutional objectives. These funds provide an incredible financial impact on the student experience at Southwestern University. J. S. Abercrombie Faculty Enrichment Fund
Established in 1974 by the J. S. Abercrombie Foundation to provide faculty salary support in curriculum enrichment.

Virginia Henderson Adams Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2016 by Virginia Henderson Adams to provide scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need and academic excellence majoring in either the departments of fine arts or business.

Jack and Dana Albright Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2019 by Jack and Dana Albright to provide scholarships to students with demonstrated need and majoring in education, religion and/or philosophy.

Martin Esteban Aleman Truan-Aleman Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2002 by Esteban’s parents, Martin Aleman, Jr. and Armida Truan Aleman. Scholarship recipients must be members of one of the Texas Conferences of The United Methodist Church with first preference given to students in the Rio Grande Conference.

Established in 2019 by Dr. Steven Alexander and Patrick Alexander to provide scholarships to eligible pre-engineering students.

Established in 2000 to provide scholarship assistance to students with demonstrated financial need.

Established in 2004 by the Albert & Margaret Alkek Foundation to support the Paideia Program at Southwestern University.

Established in 2017 in memory of Stephanie Quimby ’02, by the alumnae of the Theta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta to provide scholarship assistance to an active member of Alpha Xi Delta.

The Richard T. Alves, Jr. and Susan Alves Bonnette Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1997 by Sue Birdwell Alves, Class of 1951, to provide scholarships for gifted and talented students.

Established in 2008 by Sue B. Alves ’51 to support the Paideia Program at Southwestern University.

The Jessie Daniel Ames Lectures Endowment
The Jessie Daniel Ames Lecture Series focuses on the professional and civic achievements of women. Established in 1985, the lecture series is named for Jessie Daniel Ames, a 1902 alumna of Southwestern University who championed the causes of voting rights for women, prison reform and anti-lynching legislations. A business person and leader in the national suffragist movement, she was a founder and the first president of the Texas League of Women Voters and was one of the first women delegates to the state and national Democratic conventions. The Jessie Daniel Ames Lectures are one facet of the Women’s Studies Program at Southwestern University. The Women’s Studies Program is funded in part through a matching grant by the RGK Foundation of Austin. This lecture series was developed to bring to campus speakers from the national community of leaders on women’s issues for the Women’s Studies Program.

Established in 1978 by the estate of Lulu D. Ames to support and further the Department of Sociology.

Drusilla Huffmaster Anderson Endowment for the Fine Arts
Established in 2011 by family and friends of Drusilla Huffmaster Anderson to assist eligible students with the costs associated with travel and other expenses incurred in their research, creative works, and/or educational pursuits in the field of music.

James Robert Andrews Endowed Fellowship
Established in 2006 by the family and friends of James Robert Andrews, Class of 2004, in memory of his strength, courage, determination, and intellectual curiosity. Fellowships shall be awarded to graduates of Southwestern University, who meet certain guidelines, to fund a portion of educational costs of attending graduate or professional school.

Established in 2008 by Mary E. Medley ’74 and her family in honor of Coach R.M. Medley, Dr. Tex Kassen, Dr. Carla Lowry and Dr. Glada Munt to provide resources to enhance the annual University budget for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The Atkin Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics
Established in 1980 by John Thatcher and Genevieve Critz Atkin in memory of their sons, John Mason and Richard Thatcher. Preference will be given to majors in mathematics or physics and the recipient must be of sophomore, junior, or senior standing.

Established in 1978 by Mr. & Mrs. J. T. Atkin of Georgetown, Texas to purchase books in the math field for the Cody Memorial Library.

Established in 2021 by H. Brent Austin of Spicewood, TX in loving memory of his wife, Joanne Powers Austin, Class of 1974 to support scholarships for students with demonstrated need or who have achieved academic merit.

Established in 1975 by Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Barnhart to be awarded to ministerial students worthy of financial aid.

Established in 1975 by Mr. & Mrs. Claud Barrett to provide financial aid to students with demonstrated need.

Beckendorf-Roberts Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2017 by Stuart D. Roberts ’86 and Karen Roberts to provide need-based scholarships to students. Updated in 2021 and renamed the Beckendorf-Roberts Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Spurgeon Bell Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1996 by the estate of Judge Bell, a District Attorney, State’s Prosecuting Attorney, Bronze Star recipient, Professor of Law at South Texas College of Law, member of Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Phi, and Sigma Rho Fraternities, and Distinguished American Award recipient to provide scholarship assistance.

The Doug and Nell Benold Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1999 by Dr. Doug Benold, Class of 1944, and Mrs. Nell Barnes Benold, Class of 1948, of Georgetown, Texas to provide scholarships for graduates of Georgetown High School in need of financial assistance.

Established in 1999 through the estate of Maxine Benold, Class of 1942, to provide scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need.

Nell Barnes Benold ’48 - Zeta Tau Alpha Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2015 by The Lambda Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha and Dr. Douglas Benold to honor of Nell Barnes Benold ’48 for her service to the Zeta Tau Alpha Chapter and to provide scholarships for active sophomore, junior or senior Zeta Tau Alpha students with financial need who are in good standing with the University.

Bishop-Durst Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Mr. Nelson D. Durst, Class of 1936, and Mrs. Annie Bishop Durst, Class of 1936, as a memorial tribute to their parents, John W. and Janie Snowden Bishop, and Richard J. and Annie Jordan Durst. Scholarships shall be awarded to students majoring in mathematics or business, with a preference for accounting majors.

Established in 1990 by Mrs. W. Clyde Blundell in memory of her late husband and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Blundell to provide scholarships to students with demonstrated financial need. Preference to be given to students in the field of teacher education.

Matthew C. Boeer Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2010 by family and friends of Matthew C. Boeer to provide scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need, academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, and sincere dedication to community service.

The Elizabeth Anne Bonnette and Stephanie Diane Bonnette Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2001 by Sue Birdwell Alves ’51, of Lafayette, Louisiana, in honor of her granddaughters, Elizabeth Anne Bonnette ’01 and Stephanie Diane Bonnette ’04, to provide scholarships for gifted and talented students.

John L. and Gayl Hall Bradfield Scholarship
Established in 1998 by the Bradfield Trust to provide unrestricted scholarship funds. This trust was created by Dr. John L. Bradfield, a distinguished physician, community leader, and member of First United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas. He and his wife Gayl Hall Bradfield shared a concern for helping young people obtain an education at church-related colleges and universities.

Joseph B. Bramlette Scholarship Fund
Established in 1980 by Mr. Joseph B. Bramlette of Longview, Texas to provide scholarships annually for students in The Sarofim School of Fine Arts.

Morris H. Bratton ’47 Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2013 by Milton and Anne Jordan in honor of Morris Bratton to provide scholarships to first-year students.

Rev. B E Breihan Scholarship
Established in 1980 by Mrs. Robert C. Cotner and Mr. Edward Breihan in memory of their father, the Reverend B.E. Breihan, income to be used annually to help a deserving junior or senior student who is planning to enter the ministry.

Barbara and George Brightwell Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2017 by Dr. Barbara H. Brightwell and Mr. George A. Brightwell of Georgetown, Texas to provide scholarships to students who meet Southwestern University’s requirement for financial aid with preference to students who are African American or Hispanic or first generation college students.

The Mary Vera Barrett Britt Scholarship
Established in 1976 by the late Mr. T. M. Britt of Wheeler, Texas, in memory of his wife, Vera, Class of 1918, to assist students majoring in voice in The Sarofim School of Fine Arts.

Olivia Ann Brooks Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2020 by Kermit Brooks Jr. and Delesicca McCradic Brooks to provide scholarships to students who are first-generation, from an underrepresented group and that also have a documented physical disability.

Brown Scholars Endowment
Established by The Brown Foundation, Inc. in 1978 and augmented by a second generous gift from the foundation in 2006, the Brown Scholarships are the highest financial aid award given at Southwestern. Brown Scholarships are the top academic scholarship awarded to students each year. Its value is evaluated on a regular basis.

The Brown Challenge Endowment
Established through the generosity of The Brown Foundation, Inc., the Brown Challenge matched alumni gifts to the University between 1975-1995 to encourage increased alumni participation in the annual fund, and to help build the unrestricted endowment.

The Jane Brown McCook Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2001 by Genevieve Britt Caldwell, Class of 1942, to provide scholarships to students who demonstrate financial need. Preference will go to students majoring in English or theatre and awards may be based on merit, or need, or both.

Brown Scholars
Established in 1968 by the Board of Trustees of the Brown Foundation. The Brown Scholars Program is designed to attract students of the highest academic ability and accomplishment from Texas and the rest of the country to Southwestern University.

The Alice Pratt Brown Scholarship Fund
Established in 1982 by Mr. William A. Smith in honor of Alice Pratt Brown ’24 to provide scholarships to students with financial need.

Constance Hinshaw Brown Endowed Fund for Study Abroad
Established in 2017 by Constance Hinshaw Brown ’67 and Ralph Lawrence Brown of Houston, Texas, to provide scholarships for students engaged in study abroad outside the United States and approved for academic credit by Southwestern.

The Elizabeth Feagin Brown and Foy F. Feagin, Jr. Scholarship Fund
Established in 1991 by Bob Marion Brown and Dorothy Tompkins Brown of Georgetown, Texas to support outstanding students majoring in physics or music with an emphasis in performance and stringed instruments.

Established in 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. John F. Lynch of Houston, in honor of their friend, Mr. George R. Brown.

Established in 1962 by Mr. and Mrs. John F. Lynch of Houston, Texas, in honor of their friend, the late Mr. Herman Brown.

Lucy King Brown Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 1993 by the trustees of the William A. and Madeline Welder Smith Foundation in honor of the abiding friendship between Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Lucy King Brown of Houston, Texas.

Dorothy Stevens Bruner Zeta Tau Alpha Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2017 by J. Dennis Bruner of Centennial, Colorado, in memory of his wife, Dorothy Stevens Bruner ’61, to provide scholarships for students who are active members of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority with a strong academic record and who demonstrate financial need.

Gid. J. Bryan Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2006 by Bishop Monk Bryan in memory of his father, Gid. J. Bryan, who graduated from Southwestern University in 1907. The scholarship shall be awarded to students who are active members in some United Methodist Church and are planning a career, either clergy or laity, in the United Methodist Church, preferably in the Central Texas Conference.

The Charles Henry Buchanan Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1970 by Miss Pearl L. Buchanan, Class of 1915, of Richmond, Kentucky in honor of her father, a life-long Methodist minister, to provide scholarships to a son or daughter of a Methodist minister or to a competent student preparing for a church vocation.

Burger Endowed Student-Faculty Research in Mathematics
Established in January 2020 by the Board of Trustees of Southwestern University in honor of President and Professor Edward B. Burger to support student-faculty collaborative research within the mathematics department.

Established in December 2019 by Michael Brewer and members of the Southwestern University Board of Visitors to honor Dr. Edward B. Burger and support high-impact experiences” for students.”

The Burkhardt Family Endowed Scholarship for Music
Established in 2005 by Harold D. Burkhardt, Class of 1949, and his daughter Rebecca Burkhardt, Class of 1980, to provide scholarships to students majoring in music who have demonstrated financial need.

The Carl Burkhart, Jr. Scholarship Fund
Established in 1971 by The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston, Texas to provide a scholarship to an individual in need of financial assistance, a resident of the State of Texas, and of German extraction.

The Roger M. Busfield, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2006 by family and friends in honor of Roger M. Busfield, Jr. ’47, in celebration of his 80th birthday and in recognition of his 60 years of service to his alma mater as an outstanding volunteer, fundraiser and representative of Southwestern University as a Distinguished Alumnus. The scholarship reflects his lifelong achievements and unwavering support of higher education and the arts. Scholarships shall be awarded to students majoring in theater.

John Smith Cain Scholarship
Established in 1988 by The Effie and Wofford Cain Foundation in memory of John Smith Cain (who was Wofford Cain’s brother and father of Foundation Director James B. Cain) as an expression of its desire to help deserving students obtain a college education and to help Southwestern attract and retain students who are able to excel academically.

Established in 2005 by Mrs. Genevieve Britt Caldwell, Class of 1942, to provide scholarships for students from the Panhandle region of Texas with high academic achievement and demonstrated financial need.

The Turner M. Caldwell, III Scholarship Fund
Established in 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. Turner M. Caldwell, Jr. of Amarillo, Texas, in honor of their son, Dr. Turner M. Caldwell III, Class of 1971, to provide scholarships for pre-medical students in recognition of scholastic achievement.

Established in 2001 by William, Class of 1966, and Rose Calhoun to provide scholarships to students who meet Southwestern University’s requirement for financial aid.

Roger E. Canter Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2019 by Blake Stanford ’81 and Kristi Stanford ’83 of Austin, Texas. Given in memory of Roger Canter, Blake’s step-father, who supported higher education and made it possible for Blake to attend Southwestern University. Scholarships awarded to students with demonstrated need from West Texas.

Margaret A. Cargill Foundation Fund
Established in 2009, this grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation supports teacher education at Southwestern University, with priority given to the Semester of Support Program for alumni in their early teaching careers.

Established by the estate of JRA Carroll to provide student scholarships.

Dr. David W. Carter, Jr. Scholarship
Established in 1972 by Mrs. Wirt Davis of Dallas, Texas, in honor of the life and achievements of Dr. David W. Carter, Jr., a distinguished alumnus of Southwestern University.

Established in 2001 by the estate of Julia M. Carter to provide scholarships to worthy students.

Louise and Frank Carvey Endowed Paideia Fund
Established in 2004 by Louise Britt Carvey ’44, and Frank P. Carvey, Jr.’45, to assist Paideia Scholars with the costs associated with the fulfillment of the Paideia experience requirements.

Louise and Frank Carvey Endowed Fund for Faculty Development
Established in 2009 by Louise & Frank Carvey to provide faculty scholarships, research, creative production, enrichment, and/or development.

The Cater-Ramsey Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2006 by Russell ’66 and Ann Cater Ramsey ’67, in memory and appreciation of their parents Sam and Eunice Cater and Bennis and Diane Ramsey, who gave all their children college educations. Ann credits her sister, Doris Cater Smith ’61, now deceased, for her own decision to attend Southwestern because of Doris’ great enthusiasm for the University and its professors. Russell’s experiences at Southwestern led to his brother, MarkRamsey ’73, deciding to enroll. Their daughter, Suzanne Ramsey Moran, and her husband, Mike Moran, both ’93, attended, as did Mike’s two sisters, Mollie Moran Bryant ’96, married to David Bryant ’95, and Maggie Moran ’05. It is hoped the scholarship will enable a student to begin another tradition of Southwestern graduates. Scholarships shall be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and major in history.

Established in 2018 by Amanda McMillian ’95 and Benjamin Holloway to support the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship, and the faculty of Southwestern University.

Norma and O.V. Chafin Scholarship Fund
Established in 1997 by the family of O.V. and Norma Chafin to provide scholarships to students majoring in Math, Physics, Computer Science, or other disciplines in the natural and applied sciences.

The Chance-Krueger Family Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2006 by Jack Chance to provide scholarships to students majoring in Computer Science, Physics, or Physical Science.

Dr. J. Wehrley Chapman Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in March 2020 by Dr. J Wehrley Chapman and Mrs. Patricia B. Chapman to support students majoring in the natural sciences.

Chris and Laura Chaput Endowment
Established in 2015 by Chris Chaput ’93 and Laura Chaput of Temple, Texas as a General Unrestricted Endowment. In October 2017, available funds were redesignated to support high-impact experiences for students majoring in the natural sciences and working on a natural sciences based project, or to support humanities students working on a project that concerns the natural sciences.

Established in 2017 by Valarie and Lonnie Childs to provide scholarships to African-American female students in the sciences.

Chinquapin School Scholarship
Established in 2009 by Robert Graham to provide scholarships to the graduates of the Chinquapin School in Highlands, Texas who are accepted for admission to Southwestern University and are recommended by the Office of Student Financial Assistance at SU.

Edward A. Clark Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established by friends in 1988 to honor Distinguished Alumnus, Ambassador Edward A. Clark, Class of 1927, for his many years of service to his beloved alma mater. The income is to be used for students in good standing majoring in political science or pre-law.

Class of ’42 Scholarship Fund
Established in 2010 by alumni from the Class of 1942, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this class, the first graduating class during WWII, and to honor those classmates who gave their lives for freedom. Scholarships shall be awarded to students who have demonstrated high academic achievement and with demonstrated financial need.

Established in 2008 by the Southwestern University Class of 1958, to provide scholarship aid to students with demonstrated financial need.

Established in 2014 by Edward H. Ellis Jr. and Suzanne Morrow Ellis, members of the Class of 1964, in celebration of their 50th Class Reunion and as an effort to encourage their classmates to also contribute to this endowed scholarship fund. Scholarships shall be awarded to students with demonstrated financial need.

The Clayton Fund
Established in 1971 by the Clayton Fund of Houston, Texas, originally to provide financial assistance to pre-med students, but changed in the early 1980s into a general endowment.

The Stewart and Elizabeth Clendenin Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Mr. E. Philip Bush, Class of 1975, and Pam Slaughter Bush, Class of 1976, to provide scholarships for students pursuing ordination in The United Methodist Church.

F. Burr and Doris J. Clifford Endowed Fund
Established in 2005 by the family of F. Burr and Doris J. Clifford to honor the long association of their parents with Southwestern University and the example they set of lifelong learning with an emphasis on breadth and excellence of scholarship, and reflecting the Cliffords’ focus on the Humanities and a Christian worldview.

Established by Larry and Susan Connell in 2006 to provide scholarships for textbook expenses for one or more students.

Established in 1993 by Pearl B. Cox in memory of her late husband, Larry Cox, who attended Southwestern in the mid-1920s, to fund programs supporting horses, large animal endeavors, or other animal-related uses.

Jackson B. and Julia B. Cox and Frances Cox Carnes Scholarship Fund
Established in 1962 by members of the Cox family, their friends, and members of the University United Methodist Church in Austin in memory of Mrs. Jackson B. Cox–the former Julia Barcus.

William Henry and Necia Colon Cox Scholarship
Established by William Arthur and Mardilla T. Cox of Irving, TX in memory of the Reverend Mr. Cox’s parents to assist students in preparing for church-related vocations.

Cragg Family Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2010 by Christopher E. ’83 and Lauren Jones Cragg ’83 to provide scholarships to studio arts, theatre or musical theatre majors.
