Violence Prevention & Response
Making SU free from dating/domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
Introduction
Your time in college will be filled with many firsts—but relationship violence should never be one of them. Unfortunately, college campuses everywhere experience high rates of dating and domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
Southwestern has received a federal grant to strengthen prevention and improve our campus response to this violence. My role is to assess and enhance how the University works to prevent and respond to sexual and relationship violence through culturally responsive and inclusive practices.
Violence affects all of us—directly or indirectly—and I’m committed to working with every member of our community to make SU a safer, more caring place. If you or someone you know has been affected by dating or domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, you are not alone. Help is available.
About Randall
Hello! I’m Randall Ischy, Project Director for Violence Prevention & Response at Southwestern.
I grew up near College Station and earned my bachelor’s in Spanish and English from Sam Houston State University. Before coming to SU, I worked in business management, high school teaching, and nonprofit work—all experiences that shaped my commitment to social justice and education.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, cooking, hiking, music, chess, and spending time with my wife and our pets. I also play saxophone in a local brass band.
What I love most about this work is that I get to do a lot of different things to help create positive change and social justice—teaching, collaborating, advising, and supporting efforts that make our community safer and more inclusive. I especially value working with young men to explore healthier, more inclusive forms of masculinity, since men perpetrate most relationship violence.
What Types of Violence Are Covered
Our federal grant addresses four main categories of interpersonal violence:
- Dating violence – violence within a dating relationship
- Domestic violence – violence by a current or former partner or cohabitant
- Sexual assault – any sexual act committed without consent
- Stalking – a pattern of behavior that causes someone to fear for their safety or experience serious distress
All of our prevention and response efforts are culturally informed, recognizing that violence and relationships can look different across communities, including Latine/Hispanic and LGBTQIA+ populations.
How SU Addresses Sexual & Relationship Violence
Through our federal grant, we are:
- Creating a coordinated community-response team to address sexual violence on campus
- Ensuring that campus security and other responders receive trauma-informed, culturally specific training
- Providing mandatory education for all students on preventing sexual violence
- Ensuring that the resolution process (Title IX and related procedures) is culturally informed and optimized.
Ways I Can Help
- Leading workshops with groups on campus over a wide range of topics related to preventing violence, such as consent, bystander intervention, healthy versus abusive relationships, and more
- Listening to members of the SU community about what prevention efforts are working and what could be improved
- Assisting student groups with various awareness and educational programming, like Denim Day, Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities, and more
- Connecting students to resources
- As a confidential reporter on campus, I can confidentially listen and respond to students who have experienced sexual violence, give guidance, and help them to understand what their options are.
