Counseling Center
Training
The Counseling Center Training Program provides comprehensive clinical training in a supportive university setting.
The Counseling Center Training Program is designed for graduate students pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees in the counseling field. Interns are asked to commit to both the fall and spring semesters, averaging 20–24 hours per week. This schedule includes 12 hours of direct client service through individual and group therapy sessions, individual and group supervision, didactic training, and administrative time for documentation and related tasks.
Our site offers the valuable experience of working consistently with the same clients throughout the academic year, providing opportunities for long-term therapy and continuity of care. Direct service expectations are structured to accommodate client cancellations, university holidays, and no-shows without affecting training goals or required hours.
Interns work exclusively with Southwestern University students, typically ages 18–22, who represent diverse identities and present with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, trauma, identity development, relationship and family issues, body image, and disordered eating. We strive to match trainees with clients that align with their areas of clinical interest. Interns are supported in developing their own theoretical orientation and integrating evidence-based techniques that best meet their clients’ needs.
