Senior Director of Integrative and Community-Engaged Learning

Integrative learning is the process of building meaningful connections between your experiences so you can apply your skills and knowledge within and beyond the classroom. At Southwestern, our Paideia approach to education enables you to bridge your academic coursework to campus life as well as to broader social issues. High-impact learning experiences, including internships, civic engagement, study abroad, and faculty–student collaborative research, will help you broaden and deepen your perspective. And through our Mosaic model of holistic personal development, we can help you reflect on your experiences and discover how to best articulate their value to others, including graduate admissions committees and employers.

Whether you are volunteering in the local community, immersing yourself in a new language across the world, or engaging in a professor’s research program, you will develop a stronger sense of who you are as a learner, and you will hone your ability to respond to new and challenging contexts that will enhance your personal and professional growth.

By partnering with faculty, staff, student organizations across campus, local community agencies, and educational programs throughout the nation and abroad, the Center for Integrative Learning is here to support you in making the most of your entire Southwestern Experience and beyond.

Key Components and Partnerships

  • Study Abroad and Intercultural Learning

Southwestern students bring a larger perspective to their academic and professional life because they have been exposed to a larger world. Our Office of Intercultural Learning is your pathway to immersing yourself in different languages and cultures through the life-changing experience of studying abroad.

  • Undergraduate Research

At Southwestern, undergraduates become independent researchers who take ownership of their own inquiry. As early as their first year on campus, students are invited to engage in multiple research opportunities. Collaborating with faculty and peers, our students regularly present at professional conferences and even coauthor publications.

  • Internships

Two-thirds of Southwestern students participate in an internship; many complete two or three. By experiencing firsthand their areas of interest and working alongside professionals in their fields, students build invaluable knowledge and skills as well as their résumés.
