Health Professions Schools
Other Health Professions
Southwestern students apply to many health professions, including dentistry, nursing, physician assistant, pharmacy, optometry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, and veterinary medicine.
The Center for Career & Professional Development provides support to students interested in any health profession. In collaboration with faculty pre-health advisors, the CCPD offers individual advising, special events (e.g. Career in Veterinary Medicine), review of application materials, tailored practice interviews for health professions graduate programs, and assistance securing exposure to health professions fields through shadowing, volunteerism, and paid work.
Gaining exposure to the health field of your interest is crucial for your own decision-making and also shows your commitment to prospective graduate schools. Volunteering at local hospitals or clinics, reading information about professional schools and health professions careers, joining one of the campus pre-health organizations, talking with or job-shadowing healthcare professionals, and even earning a certification to work part-time in the healthcare (e.g. emergency medical technician, certified nurse’s assistant, pharmacy technician, etc.) are all great ways to explore health professions.
