Research and Creative Works Symposium
The Research and Creative Works Symposium has developed into one of Southwestern’s most important academic events. Sponsored by the Dean of the Faculty Office and the Paideia Program, the Symposium’s grand display of various interests, expertise, and in- and out-of-classroom experiences of Southwestern students, faculty and staff and encapsulates the spirit of a liberal arts education.
Southwestern University will hold the annual event on April 12, 2022. The Call for abstract proposals will be sent out February 1 and the deadline for the abstracts to be submitted will be March 13. Faculty-Student Projects
This program funds a range of faculty-student projects not eligible for HHMI funding including but not limited to archival research, research in preparation for honors theses or other significant student projects, conference travel with students for faculty not participating on the conference program, and projects in the studio arts, music and theatre. Projects may involve collaborative faculty-student research, faculty supervised undergraduate research, or intensive projects in the arts, music and theatre. The goal is to accommodate different types of faculty-student projects aimed at improving student learning and strengthening faculty teaching and/or scholarship. Tenured and tenure-track faculty members, full-time coaches, librarians and academic affairs staff with faculty rank may apply. Part-time and visiting faculty may apply with departmental approval. The program pays faculty and student project expenses during the academic year. For up to eight summer weeks, the program pays faculty and student stipends and student housing, project expenses, travel and other items related to the particular project. King Creativity Fund
The King Creativity Fund program is to support the creative endeavors of students enrolled at Southwestern University. The program encourages, stimulates, and maintains creativity by providing funds to defray the direct costs of conducting innovative and visionary projects, either on- or off-campus. All proposals submitted from students must have a letter of support from a member of the Southwestern faculty, staff or administration who is willing to serve as an advisor to the student. The King Creativity Symposium is held in the spring at Southwestern University in the Red and Charline McCombs Campus Center. The Symposium displays project exhibits and presentations.
Academic Student Travel (formerly Fleming Student Travel)
Academic Student Travel gives students the opportunity to disseminate the research they have conducted. Travel applications for Fleming Student Travel or The Sarofim School of Fine Arts Travel funds are being accepted throughout the academic school year. The student needs to complete the application for approval. Please review the 23-24 Guidelines before submitting.
To further support students’ learning and professional development experiences, travel funds are available for students presenting their work at national and regional conferences. Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF)
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program of the National Science Foundation provides stipends, and in many cases, housing and travel for undergraduate student researchers. An REU site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. This website explains the program and provides a list of programs that are available. Students must contact and apply to specific REU sites.
The Council on Undergraduate Research
The Council on Undergraduate Research has at its mission to support and promote high quality student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship. The organization provides assistance in establishing and maintaining an undergraduate research program on your campus, provides summer stipends for student researchers, and has annual meetings to assist faculty and administrators in developing undergraduate research experiences.
National Conferences on Undergraduate Research
The mission of the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research is to promote undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity done in partnership with faculty or other mentors as a vital component of higher education. NCUR holds an annual conference to showcase the results of undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity.
