Transition to Work

You’ve mastered résumés, networking, and interviewing — now it’s time to land the offer and start strong in your first role. The CCPD can help you evaluate offers, negotiate confidently, and navigate the transition from college to career.

Negotiating the Offer

  • Do Your Research
    • Calculate your minimum survivability salary (cost of living + essentials).

    • Research competitive salaries by role and location.

    • Rank what matters most: salary, benefits, start date, location, advancement, training, etc.

  • The Job Offer
    • Don’t negotiate until you have a formal written offer.

    • Remember: negotiation is expected, but flexibility may depend on the level of the role or organization type.

  • Responding to an Offer
    • Express enthusiasm and ask for time to consider (a few days to a week is typical).

    • Always get the full offer in writing.

  • Weighing the Offer

Consider:

    • The role – Why is it open? Does daily work appeal to you?

    • The company – Is it growing, stable, or downsizing?

    • Your supervisor – Do you feel confident working with them?

Salary & Negotiation Tips

  • You don’t have to negotiate, but if you do, focus on mutual gain.

  • Introduce all points at once, starting with salary. Support your asks with research.

  • Have a minimum figure in mind, but don’t reveal it.

  • If asked, respond with: “What is the range for this position?”

  • If the number works, accept. If not, counter with a researched response.

  • Watch for signals you may be pushing too hard — be ready to compromise on small things, but not big ones.

Multiple Offers

  • Let other employers know if you’re facing deadlines.

  • Be honest about your timeline while showing genuine interest.

  • Don’t accept multiple offers. Once you’ve signed, withdraw from other processes and thank all contacts.

Decision Time

  • Accepting? Confirm in writing, outlining agreed terms (don’t use the word “contract”).

  • Declining? Be prompt, polite, and professional. Always thank the organization.

  • Send a thank-you to every person involved — you’re building a reputation that may matter later.

Transitioning Into the Workplace

The workplace runs on different expectations than college. To succeed:

  • Learn the unwritten rules of professionalism.

  • Build strong relationships with your team and supervisor.

  • Keep learning and asking questions.
