T H E N A N D N OW F R O M T H E A R C H I V E S Take It Outside Dedicated in 1988, the A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center at SouthwesternUniversity contains almost 400,000 volumes, including print and non-print materials, periodicals, and electronic information sources. The facility is named in honor of A. Frank Smith, Jr. of Houston, a former chair of Southwestern’s Board of Trustees and distinguished trustee for more than 25 years. It is an expansion of the Cody Memorial Library, which opened in 1939 and was named after Southwestern’s first academic dean and Professor of Mathematics Dean Claude Carr Cody, who also served as university librarian. In 1966, a new two-story building made of limestone and glass was connected to the original building, although the glass exterior was removed during the 1988 expan- sion. Themost recent addition to the library came last October, when the James E. andMary B. CliffordOutdoor Decks opened to provide outdoor space where students can study and relax. The new decks include lighting for evening activities, charging stations, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps leading to the library entrance. 2018 2018 2022 50 SOUTHWESTERN
