Terry Ebner , Llano, TX, retired in May 2020 after 34 years of teaching and coaching baseball. Nancy Seiler Almaraz , San Antonio, TX, retired after 35 years teaching and coaching. Michael Middleton , Belton, TX, celebrated that all three of his children graduated from Southwestern: Meredith Middleton ’13 is now a dermatology physician assistant at Baylor Scott & White in Temple, TX; Lance Middleton ’16 is a flight test engineer in Huntsville, AL; and the most recent graduate is Mitch Middleton ’20 , who lives in Austin. Steven Hales , Orangeville, PA, recently published his 11th book, The Myth of Luck: Philosophy, Fate, and Fortune , with Bloomsbury Academic. He has also been appointed visiting professor and senior fellow at the University of Cambridge in 2021. Bret Wells , Houston, TX, is a full professor of law at the University of Houston Law Center, where he has taught since 2010. He has authored or coauthored eight books and more than 25 articles and essays. He is the primary coauthor on a leading treatise on U.S. interna- tional taxation that is forthcoming in 2021. His current research focuses on tax law, particu- larly corporate taxation and U.S. international taxation. He also teaches and writes in the area of Texas oil and gas. Ed Youngblood , Auburn, AL, was promoted to full professor at Auburn University, where he has taught in the media studies program since 2008. Beth Powell Butler , Georgetown, TX, began her 33rd year of band directing at Thrall Independent School District. Wendy Smith , Dallas, TX, started a doctorate in healthcare administration leadership at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Karen Willis , Plano, TX, retired from the Plano Public Library after 22 years. 1988 Jorge Diaz Cuervo , Mexico City, Mexico, is the new director general of Kybernus, a nonprofit organization with presence in every state in Mexico that promotes young leaders and their causes. Shelly Immel , Houston, TX, completed the yearlong American Leadership Forum (ALF) program to become a senior fellow, Class 47. ALF’s mission is to join and strengthen diverse leaders to engage in dialogue, explore differ- ences, and build relationships to serve the common good.
